The aim of Project “Touch” is to assess the role of work with young people on the street in order to fight and prevent violence, in addition to improving the performance by the social workers involved. The actions taken by professionals who take part in such instances will be examined, and the consequences for the youngsters involved or affected by street violence will be evaluated.
The European program Daphne III was created with the aim to investigate and develop measures and actions to prevent and fight violence against minors, teens and women and to protect victims and high-risk groups. Its priorities include the prevention of street and group violence, media violence, physical punishment on children and the creation of the needed abilities within police forces to deal with gender violence.
Within this framework we find Project “Touch”, started as an initiative by the Newman University College in England and counting among its contributors with public and private institutions that work with young people, such as Borough Council Detached Youth Work Team, Caritas Austria, or Dynamo International, among others.
By launching this project it is expected to assess the impact of social work on the streets in fighting and preventing street violence. Throughout these actions, an attempt to meet the needs of young people in this respect will be made, since currently the soaring levels of street violence are not being addressed properly and the cohesion of communities and educational centers is suffering thereof. It is worthy of note, on that respect, the fact that racial violence is increasing markedly throughout Europe.
This project will also represent a benefit for those workers involved in street work by examining the whole range of possible measures to be taken with young people on the streets in order to face street violence. This will be achieved throughout the opening of new premises where young people will find a place where their voice will be heard and where training of street educators will be accomplished, along with any coordination needed among the educators themselves.
