The European Commission has announced a drastic budget reduction in its food aid program aimed to support Europe’s most disadvantaged citizens. The cut represents 400 million less this year.
According to various charities this reduction may involve depriving 2 million European citizens of a food aid they need. It is also estimated that 42 million people live under the threat of food deprivation in Europe.
These grants began in 1986 during a harsh winter with agricultural surpluses, but later the grants were assigned as an expense in the budgets of the CAP. In 1990, food stocks were deleted. This issue has generated substantial debate in courts, because it is a social support that has nothing to do with agriculture. Whether it is a legal issue or not, the fact remains that 80 million European citizens are at risk of social exclusion and live on a day-to-day struggle against poverty.
