Under the slogan “Louder together”, London has seen the launch of a campaign in favour and for the recognition of the International Day of Street Children on each April, 12th. On that precise day, the London’s National Theatre held the opening ceremony, which was capped with a photograph exhibition and speeches by several authorities on the matter.
Along with achieving recognition for the official creation of the International Day of Street Children on each April 12, CSC aims to echo the voices of millions of children all over the planet who live or work on the streets and to remind that those rights recognized by the Children’s Rights Convention cannot be denied: the right to protection, the right to participation, the right to social benefits and the right to protection from violence. CSC expects to achieve official recognition from the United Nations for the day.
The date will represent an opportunity to remind the authorities that action is needed, knowing that these children are vulnerable in the extreme and find themselves in a major social exclusion situation, facing in most cases the same problems: violence, trafficking, forced labor and sexual exploitation—all of this as they fall into oblivion based on many a nation’s policies and practices. Just as CSC defends, street children are often “invisible” and lack the necessary means to make their opinions heard by those who could change their situation. Thus it’s up to us to support them and make their voices heard.
The celebration for the first International Day of Street Children on April 12 was attended by diplomats, political authorities, and members of the Consortium for Street Children and representatives from civil organizations and from the private sector. During the ceremony, Danny Boyle, director of the movie Slumdog Millionaire, explained his experience in India and in Scotland with street children, while the Co-President of the Parliamentary Group for Street Children, Russell Brown, stressed the importance of effecting changes on government policies regarding street children. The first International Day for Street Children was celebrated as well in other countries, such as Morocco, Uganda, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Ireland and Tanzania.
