The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) struggles to ensure education for all children around the world and aims at making children and adults aware of this problem.
Like every year, GCE organized a Global Action Week (from 19 to 15 of April 2010) whose theme, linked to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, was this time « 1 Goal = a Lesson for all ». All the schools were also invited to take part in the world's biggest Lesson. The purpose was to remind adults that Education is a right for all… it was held simultaneously, on April 20th, through 100 countries in order to mark the occasion.
The GCE has the support of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to be held in South Africa. This collaboration is very important because it is the first time the World Cup will be held on the African continent (where many children don't have the opportunity to go to school) and thus also represents an opportunity to make many people aware of the education problem, thanks to the media coverage that this competition will generate. Thus, matches between schools, interclass’s,… were organized in order to score goals so that all children can go to school.
Dynamo International, an NGO managing various projects helping to establish a better understanding of children and young people of the street and their realities, takes part in the Global Campaign for Education, in collaboration with the Municipal and Professional School for Horticulture (ICPH).
This year, one specific day was organized with the school principal, two religion teachers and an ethics professor (for the Lesson) as well as with the educators (for the interclass game).
The lesson took place in the gymnasium of the school : it included 30 students (Horticulture and Service to the People, secondary school), and 5 teachers. Following the framework of the Lesson, the children have really led the debate and demonstrated relevant reflexions :
- The 2010 World Cup and the Global Campaign for Education : some students discussed the fact that footballers were not always an example of education (uncivil behavior in football stadiums).
- 75 million children missing out school : the students had some difficulties to imagine what this figure represent in terms of quantity and were quite surprised that so many children don’t have the opportunity to go to school.
- With the support of the World Cup to the GCE, there were many comparisons between education in Europe and Africa : students could realize certain conditions African children had to face within education (for example, in Malawi, each teacher has 72 students on average!) and how lucky they were, in Belgium, to study in classes much less crowded.
- Possible solutions : they found by themselves some interesting tracks for the access to education for all, such as beeing volunteer in the Southern countries to assist in the construction of schools, more human resources (teachers) and material (see what is a pen for some children)… and of course more money for education.
An interclass match was held on Uccle's football field, where the good weather and the students good mood were where part of the game… Moreover, the students had the visit of the Alderwoman in charge of the Education for the municipality of Uccle, Mrs Joëlle Maison. The match ended with a score of 4-1 for the pinks…
